What is keyword density?

Keyword density is the percentage of your text that a keyword makes up. If a phrase appears 10 times in a 1,000 word article, its density is 1%. Use the numbers to spot words that you use too often, and to check that your main topic is clear.

Tips for good keyword use

  • Write for people first. Do not repeat a keyword just to raise a number.
  • Use your main keyword in the title, the first paragraph and at least one heading.
  • Use related words and variations, not only the exact keyword.
  • If the density is very high, rewrite some sentences with different words.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good keyword density?

There is no official number. Many writers keep a main keyword between about 0.5% and 2.5% and focus on natural writing. Search engines do not need a fixed percentage.

How is keyword density calculated?

The tool counts how many times a phrase appears and divides it by the total number of words. The result is shown as a percentage.

Why does the URL option not work for some pages?

The page must be public. Pages that need a login, block automated visits, or show their text only with JavaScript cannot be read. In that case copy the text and use the Paste text option.

What does “ignore common words” do?

It hides words such as “the”, “and” and “of”, and phrases that start or end with them, so you see the useful keywords.

Does the tool store my text?

Pasted text is checked in your browser and is not stored. For the URL option, our server downloads the page only to read it for you.

Can I check other languages?

Yes. The tool reads letters from most languages. The list of common words to ignore is English only.
