How to use the XML Sitemap Generator

  1. Type your website address, for example https://example.com.
  2. Choose the maximum number of pages and the optional settings: change frequency, priority and last modified.
  3. Click Generate Sitemap. We follow the links from your home page and check each page.
  4. Click Download sitemap.xml or copy the XML.
  5. Upload the file to the main folder of your website and submit it in Google Search Console.

Features

  • Crawls up to 200 pages, three pages at a time so your site is not overloaded.
  • Only adds good pages: skips broken pages, redirects, noindex pages and canonical duplicates.
  • Follows robots.txt rules and ignores nofollow links (you can turn robots.txt off).
  • Can also read your existing sitemap.xml to find pages that have no links.
  • Optional lastmod, changefreq and priority tags. Correct XML escaping.
  • Shows a list of skipped and broken pages so you can fix them. Free, no signup.

Good to know

  • Google ignores priority and changefreq. Only an accurate lastmod date is useful, so the best choice is “From page” or no date.
  • One sitemap file can hold up to 50,000 addresses. This tool is meant for small and medium sites. For a very large site, use your CMS or SEO plugin.
  • If you use WordPress with Yoast, Rank Math or AIOSEO, your sitemap already exists. Open /sitemap_index.xml or /sitemap.xml to check.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an XML sitemap?

It is a file that lists the important pages of your site so search engines can find them faster.

Where do I upload sitemap.xml?

Put it in the root folder of your website so it opens at https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml.

How do I submit it to Google?

Open Google Search Console, choose Indexing, then Sitemaps, type sitemap.xml and click Submit.

Why are some pages missing?

A crawler follows links. Pages with no links to them, pages blocked by robots.txt, noindex pages and broken pages are left out. Tick the existing sitemap option to include more.

Why did it stop before my page limit?

We only found that many good pages by following links. Your site may be small, or some pages may not be linked.

Does it crawl pages made only with JavaScript?

No. We read the HTML that the server sends, as many bots do first. Links created only by JavaScript are not seen.
